Korean Grammar Beginner -Particles- (19): N보다

I. Examples

In Korean, when using the particle “보다,” it signifies that the word before it will serve as the benchmark for making a comparison. This structure aligns with the English comparative forms ‘more … than’ or ‘-er than.’ While typically, 보다 is attached to a noun to create ‘N이/가 N보다 ~하다,’ the order of the subject and noun with 보다 can be swapped without altering the meaning. Additionally, while the adverbs 더 and 덜 are commonly used in conjunction with 보다, they can be left out.

<Example 1>

  • 자동차가 자전거보다 빨라요.
    (Cars are faster than bikes.)

<Example 2>

  • 철수는 형보다 키가 더 커요.
    (Cheolsu is taller than his older brother.)

<Example 3>

  • 금요일보다 토요일이 더 바빠요.
    (I am busier on Friday than Saturday.)

<Example 4>

  • 어제보다 오늘이 (더 / 덜) 추워요.
    (Today is (colder / less cold) than yesterday.)

<Example 5>

  • 딸기를 사과보다 (더 / 덜) 좋아해요.
    (I like strawberries (more / less) than apples.)
