처럼/같이 is used to convey that an action or thing resembles or is similar to the preceding noun. It functions akin to ‘like’ or ‘as … as’ in English, indicating a likeness or similarity between two subjects.

<Example 1>

  • 철수는 마이클 잭슨처럼 춤을 잘 춰요.
    (Cheolsu dances well, just like Michael Jackson.)

<Example 2>

  • 영희는 천사같이 착해요.
    (Younghee is kind, just like an angel.)

1. When Expressing Characteristics Metaphorically

In Korean, expressions like “처럼” or “같이” are frequently used metaphorically to liken certain characteristics to animals or elements of nature. Examples include 호랑이처럼 무섭다 (someone intimidating as being as scary as a tiger), 거북이처럼 느리다 (someone who tends to be slow in their actions as moving like a turtle), 돼지처럼 뚱뚱하다 (someone as being as plump as a pig) and 바다처럼 마음이 넓다 (praising someone’s generosity as having a heart as vast as the sea).
