Korean Grammar Beginner -Tenses- (4): Future V-(으)ㄹ 거예요

I. Examples

By adding -(으)ㄹ 거예요(= will, be going to) to the verb stem, you can express a future plan or intention in Korean. -ㄹ 거에요 is used when the verb stem ends in ㄹ or a vowel, while -을 거에요 is used when the verb stem ends in a consonant.

<Example 1>

  • 다음 달에 차를 살 거에요.
    (I am going to buy a car next month.)

<Example 2>

  • 방학동안에 제주도에 갈 거에요.
    (I am going to Jeju Island during the vacation.)

<Example 3>

  • 저는 조금 있다가 먹을 거에요.
    (I will eat in a little while.)

1. Verb Stem Ends in Vowel or ㄹ

  • 가다(go) + -ㄹ 거예요
    = 갈 거예요(will go)
  • 보다(see) + -ㄹ 거예요
    =  거예요(will see)
  • 공부하다(study) + -ㄹ 거예요
    = 공부 거예요(will study)
  • 만들다(make) + -ㄹ 거예요
    = 만 거예요(will make)
  • 사다(buy) + -ㄹ 거예요 * irregular form
    =  거예(will buy)
  • 살다(live) + -ㄹ 거예요 * irregular form
    =  거예(will live)

2. Verb Stem Ends in Consonant

A. Regular Form

  • 입다(wear) + -을 거예요
    = 입 거예요(will wear)
  • 받다(receive) + -을 거예요
    = 받 거예요(will receive)
  • 씻다(wash) +-을 거예요
    = 씻 거예요(will wash)

B. Irregular Form

  • 듣다(listen) + -을 거예요
    = 들 거예요(will listen) /
    을 거예요(X)
  • 붓다(pour) + -을 거예요
    = 부 거예요(will pour) /
    을 거예요(X)
  • 돕다(help) + -을 거예요
    = 도울 거예요(will help) /
    을 거예요(X)

Like all languages, Korean grammar has rules, and of course, exceptions. So, encountering these exceptions might be challenging, but remember, learning a foreign language is a struggle everyone goes through. Do not get discouraged by these.
