II. Grammar Point

1. Indicating The Place Where an Action Occurs

The particle ‘에서’ is appended to nouns to indicate the location where an action or behavior takes place. In other words, “에서” is used not only when simply indicating a location but also when describing an action taking place at that location, as opposed to just specifying a place. It is used instead of “에” in such cases. It can be translated to ‘at’ or ‘in’ in English.

2. 에/에서 + 살다

For the verb “살다” (live), both the particles 에 and 에서 can be used, with little difference in meaning. 저는 서울 살아요 conveys the condition of residing or existing in Seoul, while 저는 서울에서 살아요 emphasizes the action or conduct of living in Seoul.

3. 에 vs 에서

에 denotes the location of a person or object, or the direction of their movement or mainly employed with verbs that express action, position, or presence. Meanwhile, “에서” denotes the location where an action takes place and is employed with a range of verbs.
