I. Examples

-(으)면서 indicates that the actions of the first and second verbs are happening at the same time, similar to ‘while’ in English. It takes the form -면서 when the verb stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ, and -으면서 when it ends in a consonant.

 <Example 1>

• 커피를 마시면서 케이크를 먹습니다.
  (I drink coffee while eating cake.)

 <Example 2>

• 운전하면서 카톡하지 마세요.
  (Do not text while driving.)

<Example 3>

• 제이슨은 걸으면서 노래를 들어요.
  (Jason listens to music while walking.)

II. Grammar Point

1. Transformation Examples

A. Stem Ending in Vowel or ㄹ –> -면서

• 가다 + -면서 –> 가면서
• 보다 + -면서 –> 보면서
• 기다리다 + -면서 –> 기다리면서
• 방문하다 + -면서 –> 방문하면서

B. Stem Ending in Vowel or ㄹ –> -으면서

• 읽다 + -으면서 –> 읽으면서
• 먹다 + -으면서 –> 먹으면서
• 닫다 + -으면서 –> 닫으면서

C. Irregular Forms

• 울다 –> 울면서
• 만들다 –> 만들면서
• 걷다 –> 걸으면서
• 짓다(build) –> 지으면서
• 돕다 –> 도우면

2. The Subjects of Both Clauses

A. Both Must be the Same Person

B. If Different, -는 동안 is Used.

• 레아가 쿠키를 만드는 동안 영희는 김밥을 만들었습니다.
  (While Lea was making cookies, Younghee made kimbap.)

• 레아는 쿠키를 만들면서 김밥도 만들었습니다.
  (Lea made cookies while also making kimbap.)

3. Always Present Tense
–> Past & Future Tense + -(으)면서 

• 어제 레아는 쿠키를 만들었으면서
  김밥도 만들었습니다. (X)

• 내일 레아는 쿠키를 만들 것이면서
  김밥도 만들 것입니다.(X)
  –> 내일 레아는 쿠키를 만들면서
  김밥도 만들 것입니다. (O)
