Korean Grammar Beginner -Time Expressions- (3): V-고 나서

I. Examples

-고 나서 is used to indicate the sequential transition from one action to another, signifying ‘doing (something) after’, ‘upon finishing’, or ‘and then’ in English. However, there are cases where -나서 can be omitted without altering the sentence’s meaning, like in 식사하고 나서 일하세요 and 식사하고 일하세요. In this case, using -고 나서 instead of just -고 helps emphasize that the first action has come to a complete conclusion.

II. Grammar Point

1. Only with Verbs

2. -아/어서 in Place of -고 & -고 나서

If the subject in the first and second clauses is the same, and the following verbs come in the first clause, -아/어서 is used instead of -고 & -고 나서. –> 가다(go), 오다(come), 들어가다(enter), 들어오다(exit), 나가다(leave), 나오다(emerge (from)), 올라가다(go up), 내려가다(go down), 일어나다(get/stand up), 앉다(sit), 눕다(lie down), 만나다(meet).
