II. Grammar Point

If verb stem ends in a vowel, you use -ㄴ 후에  while -온 후에 is attached if verb stem ends in a consonant. If verb stem ends in ㄹ, you remove ㄹ and add -ㄴ후에 to the remaining part of the stem. In some cases, -(으)ㄴ 다음에 can be used interchangeably with -(으)ㄴ 후에.

1. -ㄴ후에 (Verb Stem Ending in Vowel)

For verbs ending in -하다, the stem also ends in a vowel, hence, -ㄴ후에 is used. Therefore, it takes the form -한 후에. At the same time, it is possible to separate the noun part and use it in the form of N 후에. However, there are cases where the (N of N하다 + 후에) is technically correct but rarely used just like ‘Noun 전에’ form.

For instance, while ‘노래 후에’ or ‘공부 후에’ is grammatically valid, it sounds a bit awkward and is not commonly used in practice especially if the ACT of singing or studying is presupposed. The form ‘노래한 후에’ or ‘공부한 후에’ is more natural.

2. -은 후에 (Verb Stem Ending in Consonant)

3. Delete ㄹ & Add -ㄴ후에 (Verb Stem Ending in ㄹ)
