Korean Grammar Beginner -Negative Expressions- (3): 못 A/V-아/어요 (V-지 못요)

I. Examples

‘못’ of  못 A/V-아/어요 approximates to ‘cannot’ in English. Thus, the pattern is used when expressing the subject’s lack of ability to do something mainly due to external factors. It is formed by adding 못 in front of a verb. Second way of negating verbs and adjective is to add -지 않아요 to the end of verb and adjective stems.

<Example 2>

II. Grammar Point

1. Base Form + 못 -아/어요 + -지 못해요

2. Verbs Ending in ‘하다’

Most, if not all, verbs that end in ‘하다’ are composed of ‘Noun + 하다.’ When it comes to 못 A/V-아/어요 , ‘못’ comes before 하다. If it comes at the beginning, it is grammatically incorrect. “-지 못해요” functions as it does with other verbs.

3. 안 (-지 않다) vs 못 (-지 못하다)

A. 안 (-지 않다)

<Combines with Verbs & Adjectives>

<Regardless of Ability or External Factors>

B. 못 (-지 못하다)

<Combines with Verbs, Not With Adjectives>

<Used When Unable or Impossible to Do Something>
