A/V-(으)ㄴ/는데 is used when the information in the second clause of the sentence contradicts, contrasts with, or yields an unexpected outcome compared to the first clause. It is equivalent to ‘but’ in English.

II. Grammar Point

1. -ㄴ데 / -은데 / -는데 / -았/었는

When appended to an adjective ending in a vowel, -ㄴ데 is used, whereas -은데 is attached to an adjective ending in a consonant. In the case of present tense verbs, past tense verbs, and 있다/없다, -는데 is applied.
